Mask Architect Designs Artificial Palm Oasys In  Abu Dhabi

Cooling down during the United Arab Emirates’ harsh summers may not always be easy, especially in Abu Dhabi, where temperatures may rise to a whopping 40 degrees Celsius. To solve this imminent issue, Mask Architects have created “The Oasys” as the answer to swiftly cooling down.

The Purpose Behind The Creation Of Oasys+System

This project is designed for the “Cool Abu Dhabi” challenge, a global design competition between more than 1,570 participants from 67 countries worldwide. The challenge aimed to bring about innovative ideas to tackle emerging climate change issues effectively. The secondary objective was to provide solutions for the urban heat island effect in warmer locations of Abu Dhabi. Therefore, the oasis in the middle of Abu Dhabi city was to ensure that the residents can comfortably enjoy the outdoors without majorly being affected by the heat.

Design Process Behind The Oasys

The Artificial Breathing Palm modular structure system, ‘Oasys,’ is influenced by palm leaves to create a real oasis. The Oasys system is a network of gridded stations and hubs, which function as islands of harbour and refuge. The allocated land is the first location of the intricately designed structure. It can act as a focal point used for a resting area, partaking in activities or a place for socializing. Extra space can also be used for temporary pop-ups, sitting areas, cafes, exhibitions and sports; the opportunities are endless!
The oasis space is constructed from modules of palm tree-like structures that will be the system’s primary function. The system provides functions such as spraying mist through nozzles that lay under the palms and collecting solar energy through solar panels on the palms’ roof.
Interactive lights are carefully fitted under the palms to emulate different atmospheres. Blue lights on the modules resemble the Sky; similarly, the yellow lights represent the Sun. The green lights are fitted to reflect upon Ecology. ‘The Artificial Breathing Palm modular structure system’s main objective is to act as an atmosphere and facilitate other activities. This includes an Exhibition space for Art Installations, design weeks and other wide range of events.

Benefits Of The Structure

The structure will act as a barricade from environmental issues such as heat, UV rays, noise pollution, wind and sand storms. This will be the primary system, which will control the space’s atmosphere to maintain consistent comfort levels. Trees are carefully planted around the palm to help ease the imminent issue of sound pollution and wind venturing inside. It also helps create an eco-friendly space that improves the visual image of the bustling Abu Dhabi city.

Plans Of The Oasys System

The future of ‘The Oasys’ system expands network around the city to create interconnected resting points. Since the modular systems can connect, each module can be made of different and adjustable scales. It is a mechanism that can be easily replicated to create groupings of the palm structures in any scale of space. The foundations of the structure are already in place on each plot of land marked for cooling. The foundation will accommodate the storage of water and vital equipment for ‘The Oasys.’ The cooling system will be set up once notified by the government to prepare for future heat months effectively. This system can be temporary or permanent, depending on what purpose space is used for, making adjustments to it quite flexible.
